- William Morris Davis an American geographer who created the erosion cycle.
- Eratosthenes coined the name geography: geo meaning “the earth” and graphein meaning “to write”. He also created one of the first maps known to the world
- Martin Behaim created the first globe in 1492
Types of maps
- A political map shows the states, national boundaries and even cities of a specific place.
- A physical map is a map that shows the physical landscape and features of an area.
- A climate map shows the climate of an area.
- A resource map shows the specific type of economic activity or natural resources in an area by using either colors or symbols.
- A road map shows things like major and minor highways and roads, and sometimes things such as train stations points of interest and city locations.
Types of land forms
- Valleys: A low area of land between hills or mountains.
- Plateaus: An area of relatively level high ground.
- Mountains: A large natural elevation of the earth's surface rising abruptly from the surrounding level.
- Plains: A large area of flat land with little or no trees.
- Hills: A naturally raised area of land.
- Glaciers: A slowly moving mass or river of ice formed by the accumulation and compaction of snow on mountains or near the poles.
Types of water bodies
- Oceans: A very large expanse of sea.
- Gulfs: A deep inlet of the sea almost surrounded by land, with a narrow mouth.
- River: A large natural stream of water flowing in a channel to the sea, a lake, or another such stream.
- Lakes: A large body of water surrounded by land.
- Sea: The expanse of salt water that covers most of the earth's surface and surrounds its landmasses.
